Calm before the storm . . . of bees

Here in Ohio we’ve had a very cool and wet spring. We have had several days up in the high 70s and low 80s, but then we’ll get many days of rain and temps in the 40s and 50s. This has not been a great spring for the bees. Today, it’s very windy and cool so we can’t be out in the bee yards.

However, we’ve been trying to fight the weather as well as we can and do what we are able to when the weather cooperates. One thing we have accomplished is marking our overwintered queens. We are trying to get all of our hives and the queens marked for the hives that we will be selling nucs out of.

The hope is this coming week the weather will be good enough that we can start calling those that ordered nucs from us and they can then start their bee adventure.

We are also prepping for some vendor shows to make the flavored and creamed honey that we will be offering. My lavender plants are starting to turn green and the mint is going strong. See the recipe section for a lavender cookie recipe. I’ve also made 50 tubes of lip balm with our beeswax as one of the ingredients. That has been a fun new skill to learn and another way to offer more to our customers.
